Youth Development Fund

The aim is to provide the young people of Napier city with access to a personal development fund which has been established to assist young people in reaching their goals.

The purpose of this fund is to ensure that young people can make the most of every opportunity available to them, by helping to remove the barrier of financial limitations.

The strategic link

Is covered in the Napier City Council's Policy for Young People under the following objectives:

  • Identify and seek funding for potential development of young people
  • Acknowledge that young people are a diverse group and have different needs and aspirations
  • Support activities, events, programs, that reflect young people and their diversity in music, art, culture
  • To encourage young people to participate in wider community activities

The funding

Will be an amount of $3200.00 which will be given out in the form of sixteen $200 scholarships.

The process

Will involve young people in the community submitting written applications in the form of a letter or story to the Community Development Department about why they require the funding. The Napier City Council's Youth Council will decide on a shortlist of 25 applicants who will then be interviewed. From the interview process sixteen applicants will be selected to receive the $200 scholarships.

The intended outcome

That there will be more young people in Napier city reaching their full potential as members of the community through the Youth Development Fund. The allocation of this resource will ensure that young people are able to access opportunities which will enhance their personal development and growth, by providing financial support for them to achieve their dreams.

What to do

Read the criteria below, fill out an application form, and attach a letter telling us why you need $200 to help you reach your dreams or goals and participate in your chosen activity.

Applications have closed for 2011.

The criteria:

  • The applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 24
  • The applicants must live in Napier city district
  • The applicants will be required to provide clear information about the intended use of the fund
  • Applications will be in writing describing the reason for the funding and the desired outcomes, as well as, a plan about how the applicant intends on raising the remaining necessary funds for their project/course/sport/event/camp/training or other
  • Applications must include the day-time contact details of a reference person who can verify the information included in the application. e.g a coach, teacher, team leader
  • The applications must be received by the final cut off date which will be advertised at least two weeks prior
  • The applicants must be willing to have their photos used for promotional material if selected
  • Successful applicants may not reapply for this fund a second time
  • The scholarship must be used within 6 months of receipt of the fund
  • Applications for retrospective project costs (ie where the project has already been completed) will not be considered
