Liquor Laws

The legal age for you to buy alcohol is 18 years old. If the police find you drunk in a public place or trespassing on private property, they can take you into custody and take you back home or to a shelter if they think you will:

  • hurt yourself or hurt others.
  • be unable to protect yourself from getting hurt.
  • cause a large amount of damage to any property.

Napier Liquor Ban Areas

It is prohibited to consume alcohol in public areas in any of the Liquor Ban areas. Members of the public are still able to transport or carry containers of alcohol through the area (for example from a bottle store to their car) but not allowed to drink, hold or store liquor in any liquor ban area.

The Liquor Control bylaw is enforced by the police who have authority to search, detain and request details.

The liquor bans have effect from 8.00 pm to 6.00 am. It is important to note that the bans do not apply to private property at any time.

Should you have any questions with regard to the bylaw contact Council's Environmental Health Team.
