Youth Council...

Napier City Council wants to make sure that young people have a chance to participate in their community. The Youth Council of Napier (YCON) has been established so that young people have the opportunity to get involved and have their say.

YCON is... a group of young people who come together to talk about things they would like to see happening in their city, and to give ideas about what Council can do to support our youth.

The group is informal and fun, and works on a wide range of projects and events which they think are worth while throughout the year.

What YCON did in 2009... the group worked very hard on many projects throughout the year but also had heaps of fun! Some of those projects were:

Youth Development Fund - this was created by YCON in 2005. Ever since then YCON have continued giving away ten $200 scholarships to support young people to reach their dreams. However in 2009 YCON gave away sixteen scholarships. More info on the YDF page.

Goodnight Nurse Concert - over 1000 young people attend this great event that was organised by YCON and supported by Atomic Event Centre.

O2 Dance Parties - in partnership with Atomic Event Centre these dance parties were held once a term.

YCON also attended Regional Youth Council Training days that were facilitated by the Ministry of Youth Development. This gave great opportunity for YCON to meet other Youth Councils in our region.

The group also continued to give useful input and feedback into issues facing young people in Napier. They were involved with the youth survey that was provided at the end of 2009.

In order to be a part of this group... all you need to do is be keen to get connected with your city, and to share in making Napier a cool place to live.

YCON Members...

	Hannah Oosthuizen 17 years old Sacred Heart College Why are you a member of YCON? I was asked if I wanted to come along. I thought it would be great to get involved in the community a bit, especially in a Youth Council. It's a great way to get information out to teenagers. Great opportunities, Dane Rumble concert, sausage sizzles, safe parties!
	Lauren Stone 16 years old Napier Girls High School Why are you a member of YCON? Meet new people, eat yum food and talk about issues that are important to youth!!
	Chloe Katene 17 years old William Colenso College Why are you a member of YCON? I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet and work with new people and to also voice the ideas from students at school and the youth of Napier.
	Ashleigh-Hope Browne 17 years old Tamatea High School Why are you a member of YCON? We get to organise events like dance parties and concerts for the Napier Youth. Last year we had Goodnight Nurse come and play and we get to have our own input in things going on in the community. I like being on the youth council because I get to make Napier a better place for young people and we get really nice food!
	Finn Dinneen 17 years old Napier Boys High School Why are you a member of YCON? I wish to represent the youth of Napier concerning the issues which they believe are relevant.
	Emma Ayson MacFarlane 17 years old Napier Girls High School Why are you a member of YCON? Because I like representing the youth of Napier and working out how to make Napier a better place!
	Delaney Fisher 17 years old Tamatea High School Why are you a member of YCON? You get to organise heaps of things for Napier youth. The foods good too. I’m making a difference with the youth.
	Ryan Hooper 16 years old Napier Boys High School Why are you a member of YCON? I am on the youth council because I wish to voice the opinion of the youth of Napier and to make sure everyone gets an equal say.
	Stevie Ashby 17 years old Tamatea High School Why are you a member of YCON? To make a difference in the world. We get cool bags and t-shirts. I get the opportunity to get involved in local events. I get to meet good as people.
	Sarah Groom 16 years old Taradale High School Why are you a member of YCON? I'm on the youth council of Napier to make a special bond between Taradale High and Napier Youth Council that will blossom into a beautiful little flower. Also to meet new people and get involved in events around Napier. And considering this is my first day, the foods a pretty good reason too!
